The Inaugural FoT Summit

The Future of Transportation Summit is an annual event organized by National University Transportation Centers led in its inaugural version by the Safety21 National UTC on Promoting Safety based at Carnegie Mellon University. The inaugural edition of the FoT Summit will be held on Aug 13-15, 2024 in Washington, DC and is hosted by the US Department of Transportation (US DOT).

Summit Goals

The Summit will focus on harnessing the power of research and technology investments for the future of transportation.

The specific objectives of the FoT Summit are to

  • Enhance coordinated research amongst the US DOT University Transportation Centers and the broader transportation community,
  • Highlight the most impactful projects completed, around-the-corner, and over-the-horizon, and
  • Identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities, both in intermodal and multi-modal research.

The Summit will feature technical sessions, stakeholder panels and technology demonstrations that

  • Forge a vision for the future of transportation including multi-modal and inter-modal transportation,
  • Build and nurture a large community of stakeholders in transportation, and
  • Showcase the societal impact of the FAST Act- and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law-funded UTCs in advancing and enhancing the nation’s transportation ecosystem.

UTC Focus Areas

This Summit will bring together university researchers working across the following transportation research focus areas of the UTC program:

  • Improving the Mobility of Goods & People and Congestion
  • Promoting Safety
  • Reducing Transportation Cybersecurity Risks
  • Preserving the Environment
  • Improving the Durability and Extending the Life of the Transportation Infrastructure

Summit Content

Highlights of the 2024 FoT Su,mmit program include technical sessions, stakeholder panels, and technology demonstrations that focus on harnessing the power of research and technology investments for the future of transportation. US DOT University Transportation Centers will make lectern presentations, offer poster presentations and perform indoor/outdoor demonstrations. US DOT officials from all modes of transportation will be featured. A dedicated session will focus on workforce development needs and solutions. A closed-door meeting of Senior Research Officers from the BIL-funded UTCs will also be held.
